Dr. Brent Henderson
Board Chair
Dr. Henderson is Associate Professor and Chair of the Linguistics Department at the University of Florida where he has taught since 2006. He studies the structure of human language and is editor in chief of the journal Studies in African Linguistics. Dr. Henderson has twenty years experience in non-profit spaces, leading and serving on both local and international boards. He loves seeing organizations thrive and work together to better their communities.

Giancarlo Victorero
Board Treasurer
Giancarlo is the founder and owner of GiaVic Consulting, LLC, a boutique bookkeeping and consulting firm. Raised in Miami, FL, by Cuban immigrant parents, Giancarlo now lives in Gainesville, where he actively contributes to the local community. As someone who has personally experienced the challenges of dyslexia, the mission of PEAK Literacy is deeply personal to him. In his role as Board Treasurer, Giancarlo brings not only financial expertise but also a passionate commitment to educational equity.

Yolanda Hagley-Fluellen
Board Secretary
Yolanda serves as Executive Director of Gainesville Thrives, where she leads collaborative efforts to improve family well-being, increase access to resources, and advance equity through community engagement and innovative partnerships. She is a business owner, entrepreneur, and lifelong advocate for children and families, with over 30 years of experience in early childhood education. Yolanda previously served as Director of HIPPY in Alachua County for 16 years and founded the local affiliate of the Educational Pipeline to Academic Success (EPAS), a cradle-to-college support initiative.

Vincent Hampton
Board Member
Vincent is a successful Realtor with 10 years of experience. He leads the Gainesville branch of Zori Realty and balances sales with community involvement. Vincent is passionate about youth education, working with the North Central Florida Boys and Girls Club and Peak Literacy. He also runs Gainesville Lawn Care, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit. His greatest joy comes from spending time and going on adventures with his children. These moments are the heart of his life.

Dr. Carjie Scott
Board Member
Dr. Scott is an experienced higher education leader and a PEAK Literacy board member. She has served as Executive Director at Tennessee State University and CEO of The Education Equalizer Foundation. Dr. Scott advocates for diverse students and educational access. An accomplished author, she’s led initiatives to improve enrollment and student outcomes. She’s also a devoted wife, mother, and active in several community organizations. Dr. Scott is committed to empowering students through education.

JACOB LARSON
Board Member
Jacob moved to Gainesville in 1994 to attend UF and earned a degree in Business. He discovered a passion for community engagement through diverse, collaborative efforts. For over 20 years, he has served as a community pastor, championing equity and connection. Since 2015, he has owned The BULL, a downtown pub designed as a true “public house.” Jacob also serves on boards including Sustainable Alachua County and The Awesome Foundation. He and his wife are raising two daughters who love exploring their growing hometown.

Dr. Tom Benton
Board Member
Dr. Benton is a pediatrician and public health expert working with youth in Florida’s Juvenile Detention Centers. He witnesses firsthand the challenges many young people face, especially academically. Born and raised in Panama City, FL, he moved to Gainesville in the early 70s for college at UF. Tom has dedicated his career to helping at-risk youth thrive. He works to overcome academic barriers and create opportunities for growth. His commitment to education and youth is unwavering.

Leah DO
Board Member
Leah recently earned her bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Florida. Raised by her mother, Tho, a Vietnamese immigrant, she overcame early literacy challenges. With support from teachers and community, Leah learned to read and found her passion. She joined PEAK Literacy as a reading coach to support children facing similar barriers. At UF, she also served as treasurer and executive director of the Gator Giving Initiative. Leah has seen PEAK’s impact firsthand and is committed to expanding its reach.

Dr. Amanda Taylor Pate
Board Member
Dr. Pate is a Literacy Implementation Coordinator at UF’s Lastinger Center for Learning. She has led statewide literacy initiatives and helped educators meet Florida’s Reading Endorsement competencies. Amanda holds a Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from UF. Her focus is on high-quality, individualized literacy instruction for all students. As a PEAK Literacy coach, she is committed to advancing educational equity. Amanda lives in Gainesville with her husband and two children.
